A new chapter has opened for the Fiji Waters Flying Fijians coaching team with the announcement of former lock Ifereimi Rawaqa’s appointment as the assistant forwards coach and national contact coach. Rawaqa is set to collaborate closely with head coach Mick Byrne and the rest of the coaching staff to enhance the team’s forward pack while overseeing the national contact area program, which is crucial in modern Test rugby.

This strategic move comes as the Flying Fijians gear up for the 2026 international season and lay the groundwork for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Rawaqa expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this capacity, acknowledging the trust Coach Mick has placed in him. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity and the trust shown by coach Mick, and I’m looking forward to this new role. It’s an honour to work with Fiji Rugby,” he stated.

Rawaqa’s extensive experience as a player further complements his new role. Having been a key player for the Flying Fijians during the 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups, he brings not only profound knowledge of the game but also a strong connection to Fiji’s rugby legacy. His accomplishment as a sevens player, where he lifted the Melrose Cup in 2005 in Hong Kong, further exemplifies his high-level playing background.

Head coach Mick Byrne expressed enthusiasm for Rawaqa’s inclusion in the coaching team, recognizing the unique expertise that he brings. The Fiji Rugby Union is confident that Rawaqa’s addition will bolster the coaching framework and represent a commitment to marrying Fijian traditions with a high-performance approach for the future. This new direction promises to enhance the Flying Fijians’ development as they embark on their journey towards significant international competitions.
