Denver Barkey is set to make his NHL debut with the Philadelphia Flyers at the iconic Madison Square Garden, following a roster shake-up that allowed room for the 20-year-old forward. With defenseman Egor Zamula clearing waivers and moving to the American Hockey League, Barkey has seized the opportunity to join the Flyers roster.

Selected in the third round of the 2023 NHL Draft, Barkey has been turning heads with his performance in the AHL, where he has accumulated 16 points, including seven goals and nine assists, over 26 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. His play has drawn praise from Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr, who described him as arguably the best forward on the team many nights, noting his playmaking ability and work ethic. While Flahr acknowledged that Barkey needs to build additional strength to cope with the demands of the NHL, he remains optimistic about his trajectory.

As the Flyers prepare for their game against the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon, Barkey’s excitement is palpable. Flyers director of player development, Riley Armstrong, has likened him to a “mini Travis Konecny” for his relentless energy and skill both with and without the puck. Despite concerns about his 5-foot-10, 173-pound frame, Barkey’s determination and grit have won over coaches and teammates alike.

Barkey’s past season in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) saw him achieve impressive statistics, scoring 25 goals and tallying 82 points in just 50 games, before leading the London Knights to a Memorial Cup victory while battling an ankle injury. His ability to perform under pressure was highlighted during crucial games, including a strong showing in the Memorial Cup finale where he scored twice.

Summer training and a focus on strength and conditioning have contributed to Barkey’s successful transition to professional hockey. He showcased his speed, intelligence, and puck-handling skills during Flyers rookie camp and a scrimmage against the Rangers’ prospects, where he excelled and scored a goal.

Though many expected fellow winger Alex Bump, who has also experienced a successful AHL season, to receive the call-up, Barkey’s consistent performance ultimately earned him the chance to shine on the NHL stage. As he prepares to skate at Madison Square Garden, the young forward aims to continue demonstrating his potential and cementing his role with the Flyers in the coming season.
