Florida State’s Struggles: Can They Turn It Around?

Florida State’s preseason expectations have taken a significant hit after their 20-12 setback against Memphis on Saturday. This defeat solidified the ‘under’ on their projected win total of 9.5, leaving them with a maximum potential of nine wins for the regular season. The Seminoles, once tied with Miami for the highest projected wins in the ACC, now sit at an unsettling 0-3 record.

According to Brett McMurphy from The Action Network, Florida State is the first team to officially secure the under on their projected win total this season. This loss has further entrenched the Seminoles in a troubling historical context; they are the first team to follow an undefeated regular season with an 0-3 start since Arizona in 1976.

Entering the season ranked No. 10 in the AP Top 25, Florida State’s struggle has been evident both offensively and defensively. However, the offensive performance has been especially alarming, with quarterback DJ Uiagalelei managing to complete just 16 of 30 passes for a mere 201 yards along with an interception. The team’s rushing attack faltered significantly, accumulating only 37 yards and averaging an uninspiring 1.5 yards per attempt. Issues with blocking and a lack of reliable playmakers have plagued Florida State throughout this early part of the season.

Looking ahead, the critical question for the Seminoles is how many victories they can secure in 2024. They will face California next weekend, who recently achieved a notable road victory against Auburn. Given their current form, Florida State is unlikely to be favored in many upcoming matchups, making the path to bowl eligibility a daunting challenge that necessitates a dramatic turnaround from their current performance.
