Republican gubernatorial candidate in Florida, James Fishback, is facing serious allegations involving a former employee, Keinah Fort, who claims they had a romantic relationship when she was 17 years old. Recent court filings reveal that Fishback, then 27, allegedly initiated the relationship in the spring of 2022, instructing her to keep it secret. The pair reportedly lived together and were briefly engaged after Fort turned 18, but she also accused Fishback of displaying violent behavior during their time together.
Fort has accused Fishback of stalking and harassment following their breakup, which led her to file a protection order earlier this year; however, a judge denied her request. Fishback has adamantly denied the allegations, asserting that Fort had pre-existing mental health issues. He also claims that he has been fully exonerated in court after two lengthy hearings and emphasized that he has never been arrested or charged with a crime.
The Broward County School District, one of the largest in Florida and a partner to Fishback’s organization, Incubate Debate, ceased its association with him in 2022 upon learning about the allegations. Reports indicate that participants from Incubate Debate witnessed questionable behavior between Fishback and Fort during a related trip, raising concerns amongst parents.
In a further fallout, Nicole Castillo, a member of the Incubate Debate advisory board, resigned in February 2023, citing the allegations of sexual misconduct as her reason for leaving. Castillo noted that the program lost a debate venue due to the misconduct allegations, which prevented them from operating on the campus.
Despite the controversy, Fishback has continued his campaign, which has made headlines for its inflammatory rhetoric and proposals. His political platform lacks experience but includes notable suggestions such as a Department of Government Efficiency initiative intended to provide economic benefits to households.
