Florida football is set for significant changes as they welcome a new head coach and bid farewell to their starting quarterback, DJ Lagway. Following the dismissal of Billy Napier, who led the team to a disappointing 4-8 season, the Gators have turned to Jon Sumrall from Tulane for a fresh beginning. In the midst of this transition, Lagway has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.
Lagway, who served as Florida’s starting quarterback during his sophomore year, recorded a total of 2,264 passing yards, with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions over the season. The Gators managed to secure victories only at home against Long Island, Texas, Mississippi State, and Florida State. Following their win against Mississippi State, Napier was released, and the team’s performance declined, resulting in a subsequent 1-4 record for the remainder of the season.
On Monday morning, Lagway took to Instagram to share his decision, expressing gratitude for his time at Florida. “First and foremost, I want to thank God for every blessing He has placed over my life,” he wrote. “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an incredible program here at the University of Florida.”
During his freshman year, Lagway shared playing time with Graham Mertz, but took over as the full-time starter after Mertz suffered an injury during a game against Tennessee. Notably, Florida’s loss at home to Tennessee marked the Volunteers’ first victory at The Swamp since 2003.
Reflecting on his journey with Florida, Lagway previously mentioned the importance of focusing on one game at a time and his pride in being a Gator. As a highly regarded recruit, he was ranked as a five-star prospect and the top quarterback in the nation according to 247Sports, securing the third overall position in his class.
As Florida transitions to a new coaching regime, the challenges and opportunities ahead promise to reshape the program and the careers of its athletes. For Lagway, the decision to enter the transfer portal opens new possibilities as he seeks to continue his football journey.
