A tragic incident unfolded in Indian River County, Florida, where a man engaged deputies in a shootout while they were serving an eviction notice, resulting in the death of one deputy and injuries to another deputy and a locksmith. The gunman, identified as 37-year-old Michael Halberstam, sustained injuries during the confrontation and subsequently died at 3:41 p.m. on Saturday, one day after the shooting.
Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, a dedicated 25-year veteran of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire. In recognition of her sacrifice, the sheriff’s office announced her posthumous promotion to sergeant, and she will henceforth be referred to as Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow.
Sheriff Eric Flowers expressed deep sorrow during a press conference, emphasizing the emotional toll of notifying Sweeting-Mashkow’s family about her passing. He stated, “Sweeting-Mashkow made the ultimate sacrifice,” highlighting the bravery of those who serve in law enforcement.
The chain of events began on Friday morning when deputies entered a residence in the Bermuda Club community to execute a court-ordered eviction requested by Halberstam’s mother. Upon entry, Halberstam opened fire indiscriminately, prompting a response from Deputy Florentino “Tino” Arizpe, who was shot in the shoulder but is now in recovery. Locksmith David Long was critically injured and required emergency surgery following the incident.
Authorities confirmed that Halberstam had a troubling legal history, with previous narcotics and assault charges. Reports suggest he had recently lost his job and expressed concerning sentiments on social media regarding his former employer, UPS, and the sheriff’s office.
Remarkably, this incident marks only the second line-of-duty death within the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in its 100-year history. In a solemn tribute, a procession of deputies escorted Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow’s body to the medical examiner’s office.
