Ochopee, Florida, reported the highest temperature in the United States on January 22, with a high of 86 degrees, as parts of Florida experience an unusual heat wave before the arrival of a significant cold front. Cities throughout the Sunshine State are anticipating above-average temperatures, which could approach or even break daily record highs by Sunday, January 25.

While much of the eastern U.S. braces for a major winter storm, dubbed Winter Storm Fern, Florida is set to bask in warmer weather. From January 23 onward, high temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 70s to lower 80s before peaking in the mid to upper 80s by the weekend. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures could be around 15 degrees above normal for this time of year.

In contrast, the northern plains feel the effects of the impending storm, with a drastic temperature difference of over 100 degrees between the highest temperature in Ochopee and the lowest recorded at -34 degrees in parts of Montana and Minnesota. The winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall, sleet, and icy conditions from Texas through to the Northeast over the weekend, affecting travel and leading airlines to cancel and alter flights.

As Florida enjoys this brief heat spell, the mood will shift come Sunday night, with a major cold front expected to sweep through the state, dramatically lowering temperatures. Highs may struggle to reach the 50s and 60s in the days following the cold front, with lows in some areas potentially dipping into the teens and twenties, coupled with wind chill factors that could make temperatures feel even colder.

Forecasters caution that strong storms are possible ahead of this cold front, with a low risk of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes primarily on Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued weather watches and warnings across various regions to ensure that citizens remain vigilant.

In preparation for the impending cold, residents are advised to ensure their homes are equipped with necessary safety measures, such as ensuring space heaters have an automatic shutoff function. The weather in Florida illustrates a stark contrast to the frigid temperatures and winter conditions affecting much of the country, highlighting the diverse climate variations that can occur across the U.S.
