TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In an exciting showdown, the Florida A&M women’s basketball team triumphed over the Jackson State Lady Tigers with a score of 68-63 at home on Thursday, bolstered by a stellar performance from Shaniyah McCarthy, who scored 22 points.
The victory improved the Rattlers’ record to 5-12 overall and 4-2 in SWAC play. Alongside McCarthy’s standout contribution, Tahnyjia Purifoy had a solid all-around game, contributing 11 points, five assists, and four steals. Additionally, Breazia Robinson added eight points and recorded three blocks, showcasing the depth of talent on Florida A&M’s roster.
Defensively, the Rattlers proved formidable, forcing Jackson State into 20 turnovers while committing 12 of their own. These turnovers proved crucial, as Florida A&M converted them into 24 points, a significant factor in their victory. Purifoy’s four steals not only highlighted her defensive prowess but also helped shift momentum in favor of the Rattlers.
The game was closely contested from the start, with the teams entering the second quarter tied at 16-16. Florida A&M initially found success close to the basket, scoring 14 of their first 16 points in the paint. However, Jackson State briefly gained a 33-25 lead in the second quarter. The Rattlers responded with a 5-0 run, including a pivotal three-pointer from Aina Subirats, a push that brought them within three points at 33-30. Despite Jackson State’s efforts to extend their lead, Florida A&M went into halftime down by just six at 39-33.
After the break, Florida A&M managed to close the gap to 45-43, before taking the lead for the first time at 49-45 with a 6-0 run late in the third quarter. They maintained that momentum, heading into the final frame up 56-51. The Rattlers capitalized on Jackson State’s turnovers in both the third and fourth quarters, scoring crucial points off those mistakes.
As the final minutes ticked down, Florida A&M held onto their lead, proving their resilience and determination to secure the win. This matchup not only showcased their strong play but also set a hopeful tone for the remainder of the season as they look to continue improving their SWAC standing.
