The Flame Tree Colo-i-Suva rugby team, representing the Vuna district, is set to embark on a historic journey as they make their inaugural appearance at the Hamilton Fijian 7s tournament in New Zealand next week. This marks a significant milestone for the village-based squad, and team manager Laisiasa Kubu has shared insights into their journey and aspirations.
“This tour is a part of the long-term development of our club,” Kubu said, highlighting the importance of the opportunity for his players. Most members of the team have developed their skills through local rugby sevens and district competitions, with only two players having prior experience in international play as part of the senior Naitasiri team. For many, this will be their first taste of international competition, a thrilling prospect that Kubu describes as a “baptism by fire.”
The tournament represents a unique opportunity for players who have never flown before, and the team has been training diligently since November in preparation. Their participation not only serves as a competitive effort but also as a chance for invaluable exposure to rugby scouts, who will be on-site to assess talent and possibly offer professional opportunities abroad. Kubu recounted how previous trips have led other athletes, including those from an AFL Fiji team, to secure positions in Australia after showcasing their skills during similar exposure events.
Rugby is considered a vital tool for community engagement and youth development in the Vuna district. The team’s hopes are centered on gaining visibility and impressing scouts with their talent and determination. With robust support from former club members in New Zealand, local businesses, and the broader community, the Flame Tree Colo-i-Suva team is eager to represent their village on this international stage, embodying hope and the promise of future opportunities for all participants.
