Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed the arrest of five individuals as part of a significant police operation aimed at addressing unruly behavior during a heated local derby held on Sunday. Among those arrested, four were from Portsmouth, and one man, aged 36, from Southampton, faced charges of common assault.
Richard Sean Conaghan, a 34-year-old resident of Courtmount Grove in Portsmouth, is facing a court appearance after being charged with entering the pitch during the match. This incident took a serious turn when a pyrotechnic device was thrown from the Portsmouth fans’ section, injuring a ball boy who required medical treatment for a cut to his lip.
Portsmouth Football Club responded to the incidents with a statement expressing gratitude to the majority of supporters who contributed to a vibrant atmosphere at Fratton Park. However, the club condemned the actions of a few individuals who engaged in criminal activities which could lead to consequences for them and the club.
The statement highlighted that pitch encroachment was observed, with one individual already charged. In addition, multiple incidents of missiles and pyrotechnic devices being thrown from the stands were reported, which poses a serious safety risk. Tragically, one such device caused an explosion that left a ball boy needing urgent care and a staff member suffering burns.
To ensure accountability, the club is reviewing CCTV footage of the incidents and encourages anyone with information to reach out confidentially via email. Hampshire Police are also investigating the explosion incident and invite the public to provide any relevant information, referencing the associated crime number.
Historically, Portsmouth FC has faced repercussions from the Football Association for breaching regulations regarding supporter behavior, emphasizing the club’s obligation to promote orderly conduct among its fanbase. Following prior warnings, the FA has made it clear that further breaches could result in stricter penalties, including possible financial sanctions.
The club is resolute in its stance against such behavior and has stated that anyone identified as participating in pitch encroachment or missile throwing will face significant sanctions from the club, alongside potential criminal charges and football banning orders. This determination aims to safeguard the integrity of future matches and enhance safety for all attendees.
