Fitzie’s Musical Highlights: The Best and Worst of the Year

Good morning and welcome to Fitzie’s Yearly Music Review!

Last week, I expressed my thoughts on the absurdity of Spotify’s Wrapped feature. Today, I’m excited to share my own musical highlights from the past year.

In previous years, I have enjoyed showcasing the records I bought and the concerts I experienced. This year, however, my album purchases were fewer, but there were still some notable additions to my collection. Luckily, I had the opportunity to attend some fantastic concerts.

Let’s get into the details.

Fitzie’s Favorite Purchase: “Women in Music Part III” by Haim on yellow vinyl

This album has quickly become one of my favorites over the past few years, and I’ve played the standard black vinyl multiple times. It has been challenging to find variant editions, so I was thrilled to discover this yellow vinyl at Reckless Records.

Additionally, I came across some unique Japanese pressings from notable artists such as Queen, Dexter Gordon, and Bill Evans. I also remember spotting a German pressing of The Beatles’ “Revolver”, although I can’t recall if that was from this year or last.

Fitzie’s Favorite Concert: The Rolling Stones in Denver, Colorado

Attending a Rolling Stones concert has been on my bucket list for years! I originally bought tickets for my dad back in 2019, but Covid-19 led to delays in rescheduling their performance. Finally, after nearly five years, we made it to the show this year, and it did not disappoint! The Stones put on a spectacular performance, showcasing their energy and talent well beyond that of much younger peers. Ronnie Wood stood out for me, and I loved watching Keith Richards take the spotlight for a three-song segment while Mick took a breather. Each song was a classic, starting with “Sympathy For the Devil”. It’s incredible to witness how many hits they have in their repertoire.

Other concerts I thoroughly enjoyed included performances by Jack White and Vampire Weekend.

Fitzie’s Least Favorite Concert: The Decemberists in Washington, D.C.

Perhaps they just aren’t my cup of tea? I decided to give The Decemberists a chance after hearing a couple of their newer songs on the radio. I particularly enjoyed “Burial Ground” during the show, but unfortunately, the rest of the concert fell a bit flat for me, especially their lengthy “Joan In The Garden”, which didn’t quite capture the live atmosphere.

Most-Played Band: The Grateful Dead

Can anyone say they’re surprised by this choice?

Fitzie’s Favorite Radio Station: 88.5FM The SoCal Sound

This station has been my go-to since 2018. I was sad to hear my favorite DJ left for a station in Chicago, but the great music continues!

Top New Album: “Songs of a Lost World” by The Cure

I previously featured this album as my Track of the Day, and it truly showcases The Cure at their finest.

Top New Song: “Coming to a Hoddle Near You”

Fitzie’s Track of the Day: “Lost Changes” by Beth Gibbons

This year has brought its share of musical gems and memorable experiences. Despite some challenges along the way, the joy of discovering new music and attending live performances reminds us of the vibrant culture that music creates. With a hopeful outlook, I look forward to what the next year holds in store for music lovers everywhere!
