At the 44th Annual Fiji Nurses Sports Tournament, Miriama Bukalidi, a first-time participant from the Valelevu Health Centre, made a remarkable impression amidst a vibrant gathering of nurses. Representing the Nasinu Medics team, Bukalidi embraced the excitement of netball after a significant hiatus from the sport. She shared her feelings about the event, highlighting not only the thrill of competition but also the joy of reconnecting with colleagues and old friends from nursing school.
“This is my first time taking part in the tournament,” Bukalidi said. “I know it’s been a long time since I played netball, but it’s been a fun experience playing with my colleagues and reuniting with nurses from around Fiji.”
The challenge of balancing demanding shifts with training was a significant aspect for Bukalidi and her teammates. “Most of us are shift workers, so we had to find a way to balance our work and training. We often ask other colleagues to cover shifts, allowing us to train for the tournament,” she explained.
The event, held on Saturday at Vodafone Arena in Suva, concluded with CWM Hospital taking home the championship, showcasing the competitive spirit and dedication of nurses throughout the nation. Beyond the thrill of sports, the tournament served to strengthen community ties among healthcare professionals, underscoring the value of teamwork and connection that extends past the confines of their workplaces.
As Bukalidi reflected on her debut, she expressed enthusiasm for returning next year. Her experience highlights how initiatives like this tournament foster personal development, create lasting bonds, and provide essential outlets for professionals managing demanding careers. Her participation could motivate more nurses to engage in sports, further enriching the sense of camaraderie within Fiji’s nursing community. Such gatherings not only celebrate athletic achievements but also affirm the importance of connection and support among those dedicated to caring for others.
