On July 12, 1998, Evelina Ratu, a sixth-form student from Sigatoka Methodist High School, achieved a groundbreaking milestone by being awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Fiji Girmit Council, sponsored by the Indian Government. This scholarship grants students from Fiji the opportunity to study in Pune, India, and Evelina’s selection is particularly historic as she became the first iTaukei student to secure this scholarship since the 1987 military coup. Her academic journey, alongside seven other chosen students, will focus on engineering for their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
Suriva Deep Singh, Secretary of the Fiji Girmit Council, emphasized that Evelina met all the necessary criteria, marking a significant achievement not only for her personally but also for the iTaukei community. This scholarship program is a pivotal part of the Indian Government’s annual educational support to Fiji, offering 14 scholarships each year to promote international academic collaboration.
This event highlights the importance of educational opportunities and the positive impact of international cooperation on academic development. The educational relationship between Fiji and India is bolstered through various scholarships and initiatives. Recently, the Fijian government committed $153 million to support and improve accessibility for educational scholarship opportunities, benefiting over 24,000 students. Such investments, alongside international partnerships, signify progress in Fiji’s educational landscape.
The broader discussion around educational scholarships in Fiji underscores the government’s efforts to provide more opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds, including those in rural and marginalized communities. These efforts manifest in scholarships designed for various ethnic groups and genders, showcasing a dedication to inclusivity.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro’s engagements with international partners demonstrate ongoing efforts to expand educational opportunities and infrastructure, ensuring that Fijian students receive quality education and are better equipped for the labor market’s demands. Through initiatives like the Indian scholarships, Fiji is creating pathways for students to excel both locally and internationally, contributing to an educated workforce that drives economic and social advancement.
Evelina Ratu’s scholarship is not merely an individual success but serves as a beacon of hope and potential for future generations of Fijians aiming for academic excellence and international experience. Through such programs, students are empowered to move beyond local boundaries, enhancing Fiji’s global educational presence.
