The US Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs recently welcomed Assistant Secretary Mora Namdar, who was sworn in on Christmas Eve. This event marks a significant milestone as Namdar becomes the first Iranian-American to hold this important position. Her appointment is part of the ongoing efforts to implement initiatives set forth by the Trump administration, particularly focusing on advancing policies that strive to make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous.
Namdar has a long history with the State Department, having previously served as the Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs from May to December 2025. In this role, she was instrumental in shaping US foreign policy across the Middle East and North Africa, addressing key issues such as the Gaza Peace plans, regional stabilization, and countering Iranian influence while promoting human rights.
During her tenure, Namdar was dedicated to the “America First” agenda, advocating for American investment and technological advancement while also supporting strategic messaging and internet freedom. Her extensive background in national security and international human rights has equipped her for this role, having previously served as the acting Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs and Vice President of Legal, Compliance, and Risk at the United States Agency for Global Media.
Namdar boasts impressive academic qualifications, including a Juris Doctor from the American University Washington College of Law and a Master’s in International Affairs from the American University School of International Service. She also holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and International Affairs from Southern Methodist University, with an additional focus on Fine Art, Philosophy, and Human Rights. Her studies extended abroad as she spent time at Oxford University.
