Salote Drauna recently celebrated a momentous occasion alongside 100 fellow graduates from the Sangam School of Nursing and Health Care Education, proudly earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing. However, her path to this achievement was fraught with challenges that could have derailed her dreams.
Two years prior, Drauna faced a significant setback when she withdrew from school due to an unexpected pregnancy. “I had to step back because I was pregnant,” she recalled, reflecting on a time that could have changed her future. Despite this hurdle, she was determined to return to her studies. Rejoining the program this year was not without its difficulties, as balancing motherhood and education proved to be a daunting task.
“Studying while being a mom was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” Drauna admitted. The reality of sleepless nights caring for her newborn son while maintaining her academic responsibilities left her exhausted. “Every time I came home from school, I had to take care of him. I had to find time to study even when he was awake,” she explained, highlighting the dedication she showcased in managing her dual roles.
Drauna’s relentless commitment to her nursing education, coupled with the rigorous demands of clinical placements, often led to long hours away from her son. “It was difficult because he’s my first child, and spending time with your firstborn is very important. But I managed to balance both demands, and that’s why I’m graduating today,” she stated proudly.
Integral to Drauna’s success was the unwavering support of her mother, who stepped in to care for her son during her studies. “I’m so grateful to mum. Without her support, I don’t think I would have made it this far,” she expressed, emphasizing the crucial role family plays in overcoming obstacles.
Graduating with a degree in nursing marked a historic achievement for Drauna, as she became the first in her family to reach this milestone. “I’m the eldest of three, and I feel overwhelmed and excited. Today I have graduated, and it’s a very proud moment,” she shared.
Drauna’s passion for nursing has deep roots, stemming from her childhood experiences caring for her sick grandparents. “From that early experience, I developed an interest in nursing. In secondary school, I spent a lot of time at the hospital, observing nurses,” she explained, affirming that her desire to pursue this career path had been longstanding.
A poignant inspiration for Drauna’s journey was her late aunt, Unaisi Drauna, who passed away in 2022. “Her passing was heartbreaking because she had inspired me to join, but I know she would be proud to see me graduating today. She was my role model,” Drauna remarked, acknowledging the profound impact her aunt had on her decision to study at Sangam rather than the originally planned Fiji School of Nursing.
Drauna’s story embodies resilience and the profound influence of family support. Despite the challenges she faced, she refused to allow motherhood to hinder her educational ambitions. She serves as a beacon of hope for other young mothers aspiring to achieve their academic goals, demonstrating that setbacks can be overcome with determination and support.
Reflecting on her journey, Drauna concluded, “All the hard work, all the late nights, the sacrifices, it was all worth it today.” For her family, her graduation signifies not only a personal triumph but also a celebration of breaking barriers, pursuing dreams, and honoring the inspirations that guided her path.
