The first-ever Fiji Police Force Taekwondo Championship unfolded with enthusiastic participation from both children and police officers, signaling a new chapter for martial arts in the country. Held at the Police Mobile Force over the weekend, the event saw 70 participants, including 20 police officers and 50 children, eager to embrace the discipline and self-defense skills inherent in Taekwondo.
The championship drew attention with the presence of Counselor Myong-jun Kim and Consul Yun-hye Jung from the Korean Embassy in Suva. Sanghyun Ra, the National Coach from the Fiji Taekwondo Association, expressed satisfaction with the event, noting its success in uniting diverse participants to learn and enjoy the sport. Ra elaborated on the multifaceted goals of the championship, aiming to boost physical and mental strength, foster a healthy leisure culture within the police community, and promote the sport’s growth in Fiji with an eye on international competitions.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu highlighted the importance of self-defense in today’s volatile world, advocating for the skills provided by Taekwondo as tools for protection against negative influences, like violence and drugs. His emphasis on fitness and discipline resonated with the children who underwent rigorous training for the championship.
Building on the event’s momentum, the Fiji Police Force plans to introduce Taekwondo training within its ranks, piloted by the Police Mobile Force. Once trainers are fully equipped with the necessary skills, they will expand to offer training across various divisions.
This event marks an exciting development in Fiji’s athletic landscape, emphasizing community engagement and the holistic benefits of martial arts. By uniting sports and community, Fiji aims to create a robust platform for skill development and healthy recreation, lighting the path for future leaders in Taekwondo. Moreover, with support from international figures and local leadership, there is optimism that such initiatives will elevate the sport’s profile, engaging more youth and cultivating a culture of discipline and resilience in the region.
