The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is now actively participating in discussions regarding amendments to the concession agreement between the government and Health Care Fiji (Pte) Ltd, a significant shift from previous negotiations where the ministry was excluded. Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu expressed gratitude for the ministry’s involvement in shaping the new agreement, emphasizing its role as a key stakeholder in this public-private partnership (PPP).
“For the first time, the Ministry of Health is involved in the actual drawing up of the new agreement,” Dr. Lalabalavu stated. He highlighted that prior negotiations did not include their input, marking a new approach for this round of discussions. The ministry is currently contributing to the formulation of the agreement, though further details will only be available once it is finalized.
Dr. Lalabalavu ensured that the ministry’s interests, particularly concerning service delivery to the public, will be prioritized as part of the discussions. He noted that the late Permanent Secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu played an active role in the committee work, a legacy that continues with the current discussions.
Furthermore, Aspen Medical Fiji CEO Gavin Whiteside has confirmed that a second round of discussions involving the government, Health Care Fiji, and Aspen Medical regarding the concession agreement is scheduled for this week. This collaborative approach aims to enable a more inclusive and effective health service delivery model for the community, promising a positive outcome for healthcare in the region.
