A woman is in critical condition following a major fire in Pacoima, Los Angeles, that was worsened by exploding fireworks. The incident occurred on Thursday night just after 9 p.m. in the 12900 block of W. Corcoran Street, prompting a response from over 100 firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).
When LAFD arrived, they found several one-story homes engulfed in flames, with fireworks inside a detached garage exacerbating the situation and threatening additional nearby residences and brush. Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with one resident comparing the fire to an explosion as fireworks began detonating in quick succession.
Among those affected, a 33-year-old woman is in critical condition, while a 68-year-old woman experienced smoke inhalation but refused hospital transport. Reports indicate that several animals were also harmed due to the fire.
The response involved LAFD HazMat and arson investigators, the LAPD Bomb Squad, and the Mayor’s Crisis Team, highlighting the seriousness of the emergency. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze within 53 minutes, but not before it damaged a fourth home and a car.
This incident follows a deadly fireworks explosion earlier in the day in Simi Valley, raising concerns over fireworks safety in residential areas. The cause of the fire in Pacoima remains under investigation.
As the situation develops, it serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with fireworks, particularly in urban settings where flammable materials are present. Local authorities may need to underscore public safety messages as they investigate these incidents.
