Following a heavy defeat by India in their recent series opener in Ahmedabad, where West Indies lost by an innings and 140 runs, Chase spoke candidly about the challenges facing the team.
India dominated the match, winning inside three days. West Indies managed scores of 162 and 146, failing to dismiss India during their single innings. Chase explained, “I think the systems in the Caribbean are a bit poor in terms of training facilities and stuff,” although he was careful to insist that players must also take responsibility for their performances.
Chase expressed hope for improvement, stating, “Yes, there is obviously a struggle in the Caribbean for finances… whatever help we can get, if they are planning to get the help, I hope that we do get it so that we could strengthen the infrastructure for cricket.”
The captain highlighted the difficulties faced by West Indies players, particularly noting the unhelpful nature of home pitches which do not favor long innings and high scores. “The pitches in the Caribbean are not really batsman-friendly. So guys don’t really bat for long periods and score those big scores,” Chase elaborated, emphasizing that a lack of conducive batting conditions has contributed to their recent failures.
The team’s performance has been concerning, with West Indies not achieving a total exceeding 250 runs in their last 15 Test innings. The players have struggled to bat for prolonged periods, and Chase remarked on the impacts of not capitalizing on opportunities when they win the toss.
