A squad of 14 aspiring boxers from Fiji has traveled to New Zealand to participate in this weekend’s New Zealand Invitational boxing competition. The team, comprised of athletes aged 11 to 19, departed Fiji last Thursday, allowing them ample time to adapt to the local climate and conditions.
National coach Cam Todd has assembled this development team to showcase some of the emerging talents he has been monitoring over the past year at local tournaments. “We have a mixture of boxers from sub-juniors under 14, juniors under 17, to youth under 19 categories,” Todd explained. The youngest boxer in the team is just 11 years old, while others are stepping into their first year as elite competitors, which in boxing terminology typically refers to those in their 19th year.
Though Todd is eager for success against the New Zealand contingent, he emphasized the importance of nurturing his boxers’ development. He sees this competition as an invaluable opportunity for them to gain experience in international boxing, stating, “It’s crucial for their growth to experience the sport in a different environment and learn how to adapt.”
The team roster includes promising participants across various weight classes: Zeneth Ledua (35kg), Lui Lepolo (54kg), Emali Matili (53kg), and many others, showcasing a well-rounded selection of talent. This international outing will serve as a critical stepping stone in their boxing journey, exposing them to diverse fighting styles and strategies.
