Fiji’s Youth Ambassadors Lead New Diabetes Awareness Campaign

As Fiji initiates its nationwide Diabetes and Wellness Campaign, a powerful movement spearheaded by young individuals living with diabetes is also gaining traction. The Young Diabetes Fiji (YDF) program is empowering youth nationwide to transform their personal health journeys into a driving force for change.

Membership in YDF has surged from 50 to 80 active members under the age of 30, with new participants increasingly joining from the Northern Division. Diabetes Fiji’s Executive Chair, Taabish Akbar, emphasizes the significant role these young advocates play, stating they have been trained as ambassadors to share their stories and raise awareness in schools, homes, and community venues.

Akbar notes, “We continue to support our young members with glucometers, testing strips, lancets, alcohol swabs, and psychosocial support. YDF members have received ambassador training, empowering them to advocate in various settings.” This support underscores the vital importance of equipping young people not just with medical supplies, but also with the knowledge and confidence necessary to promote diabetes awareness in their communities.

Looking ahead, the team is gearing up for educational camps during the school break, aimed at fostering connections, learning, and leadership among participants. Amidst a campaign that often focuses on statistics and policy objectives, these young voices infuse a sense of hope and compassion into the ongoing dialogue surrounding diabetes in Fiji.

The urgency of their efforts resonates with the broader struggles faced by many youth with diabetes, highlighted by previous reports revealing alarming statistics related to the condition, including that many young patients remain undiagnosed or disengaged from treatment due to stigma or lack of understanding. Advocates argue that a supportive environment and accessible education are crucial in helping young individuals navigate their health challenges without feeling isolated.

As communities rally to support these initiatives, there is optimism that increased awareness and education will promote healthier lifestyle choices, fostering resilience among young Fijians living with diabetes. This collective effort represents a hopeful stride toward addressing both the immediate needs and longer-term challenges posed by diabetes and its impact on future generations.
