The Fiji Amateur Boxing team is preparing to send 13 talented young boxers to the New Zealand Invitational competition at the end of this month. Head coach Cameron Todd is optimistic about this opportunity, which not only allows these athletes, aged 14 to 19, to demonstrate their skills on an international platform but also fosters their growth through collaborative training sessions with New Zealand boxers.
Todd emphasized that this experience goes beyond mere competition. “The team will have the chance to participate in joint training sessions with New Zealand boxers, which will undoubtedly contribute to our growth and experience in the sport,” he noted. His commitment to developing young talent is pivotal for the future of boxing in Fiji, particularly as he prepares for the selection of a team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
“This development stage is going well,” Todd remarked, underlining the significance of nurturing young boxers who display considerable potential and strength. The dedication shown by these athletes suggests a promising future for Fijian boxing, with grassroots support being a vital element of this journey.
In addition, Todd expressed his appreciation for the support from parents and lauded the young athletes for their commitment to the sport. The team is scheduled to depart for New Zealand on October 23, where they will not only compete but also engage in essential training exchanges, fostering dynamic growth and valuable learning experiences.
This initiative highlights the ongoing commitment to cultivating a strong boxing culture in Fiji, with a specific focus on youth engagement that is expected to inspire future champions. The forthcoming competition and training opportunities reflect a sense of hope and excitement for the advancement of amateur boxing in the nation, paving the way for the next generation of athletes.
