A team of 14 aspiring boxers from Fiji has arrived in New Zealand to compete in the upcoming New Zealand Invitational boxing competition scheduled for this weekend. The squad, featuring athletes aged 11 to 19, made their journey from Fiji last Thursday, allowing them sufficient time to acclimatize to the new environment.
National coach Cam Todd formed this development team to showcase talents he has observed over the past year during various local tournaments. “We have a mix of boxers ranging from sub-juniors under 14, juniors under 17, to youth under 19 categories,” Todd said, noting that the youngest member of the squad is just 11 years old. Others are stepping into their first year as elite competitors, a term used in boxing for those aged 19.
While Todd is hopeful for positive outcomes against the New Zealand boxers, he emphasized the pivotal role of development over immediate success. He views this competition as an essential opportunity for his athletes to gain experience in international boxing. “It’s important for their growth to face the sport in a different environment and learn to adapt,” he stated.
The team boasts a diverse lineup of talent across various weight classes, including Zeneth Ledua (35kg), Lui Lepolo (54kg), and Emali Matili (53kg), among others. This international exposure is expected to be a vital milestone in their boxing journey, offering them insights into different fighting styles and techniques.
Such competitions are not only vital for the athletes’ personal development but also signal a positive trend for amateur boxing in Fiji. As the sport garners increased attention, initiatives like this play a crucial role in nurturing talent and supporting future success on larger platforms. Coach Todd’s initiative showcases his dedication to fostering a strong foundation for the next generation of boxers, enhancing their skills and confidence as they enter the ring.
