The Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s has transformed from modest beginnings into a cornerstone of grassroots rugby in Fiji, according to its founder, Jone Vuki. Speaking from Australia, Vuki noted the tournament’s impressive evolution since its inception in late 2007.
“The tournament started very small in 2007 and has now grown to be the biggest in the world,” Vuki stated proudly. He emphasized that the unique aspect of the Wairiki 7s lies in its diverse offering of sports, which differentiates it from other tournaments globally.
Vuki explained, “No other tournament organises sevens rugby like we are doing.” The event also includes a variety of competitions such as men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s and mixed netball, as well as a junior ruggers competition. This multifaceted approach draws participants and spectators from all walks of life, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.
This year, the Wairiki 7s has seen significant growth, with participation from 21 men’s teams, 16 under-21 teams, and five women’s teams in the rugby competition that kicked off yesterday. The excitement continues as the tournament is set to conclude tomorrow, showcasing the promising future of grassroots rugby in Fiji and highlighting the tournament’s role in uniting diverse interests in sports.
