History is set to be made as the Fiji under-18 Women’s National Handball team prepares to represent the Oceania region at the upcoming 2026 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship in Romania. This noteworthy achievement comes in light of their impressive performance at the IHF Oceania Championship held in the Cook Islands last October, where they secured a bronze medal against the formidable Australian team.

The young Fijian athletes showcased their potential, with standout player Elizabeth Colata earning both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Highest Goal Scorer awards in the youth category. Her stellar performance has marked her as a rising star in the sport, capturing attention and admiration.

Handball Fiji president Sainimili Saukuru expressed that this invitation is a significant milestone not only for the federation but also for women’s sports in Fiji. “This moment represents more than participation; it is a testament to how far we have come. Sending our young women to Europe to compete against the world’s best signals the emergence of a new generation of talented Fijian female athletes ready to taste international-level competition in this new sport,” Saukuru remarked.

In preparation for the elite European competition, a high-performance pathway has been established to ensure the squad is match-ready. This includes intensive local training, increased competition exposure, and high-performance preparation camps.

Furthermore, the journey to Romania is being viewed as a stepping stone towards a broader ambition: qualification for the Brisbane 2032 Summer Olympics. Handball Fiji has initiated a campaign to support these young athletes, emphasizing that they form the “foundation generation” for future Olympic aspirations.

The federation encourages both the corporate community and the Fijian public to rally behind these trailblazers as they embark on an exciting journey to excel on the international stage. With their hard work and dedication, the future looks bright for Fiji’s women in sports, as they continue to break barriers and shine in handball on the global arena.
