History is being made as the Fiji under-18 Women’s National Handball team gears up to represent the Oceania region at the 2026 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship in Romania. This landmark achievement follows their commendable performance at the IHF Oceania Championship last October, where they clinched a bronze medal after a challenging match against Australia.

The young athletes from Fiji displayed remarkable talent, highlighted by standout player Elizabeth Colata, who received both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Highest Goal Scorer awards in her category. Her performance not only showcased her skills but also positioned her as a promising star in the sport, drawing significant attention and admiration.

Sainimili Saukuru, president of Handball Fiji, emphasized that this invitation marks a pivotal moment for both the federation and women’s sports in Fiji. “This moment represents more than participation; it is a testament to how far we have come. Sending our young women to Europe to compete against the world’s best signals the emergence of a new generation of talented Fijian female athletes ready to taste international-level competition in this new sport,” Saukuru stated.

To ensure the squad is fully prepared for the competitive European environment, a high-performance training pathway has been established. This includes rigorous local training sessions, increased exposure to competitions, and preparation camps focused on enhancing performance.

The team’s journey to Romania is being seen as a critical step towards a larger goal: qualification for the Brisbane 2032 Summer Olympics. Handball Fiji has launched a campaign to support these young athletes, who represent what is being referred to as the “foundation generation” for future Olympic ambitions.

The federation is calling upon the corporate community and the Fijian public to unite in support of these trailblazers as they embark on their exciting journey on the international handball stage. With dedication and hard work, the outlook for Fiji’s women in sports is promising as they continue to break barriers and shine in handball globally.
