Fiji’s battle against the illicit drug trade has intensified, driven by weak border control and previous leadership inadequacies, according to Ratu Meli Tora, the spokesman for Tui Vuda. He emphasized that the current issues stem from leaders who neglected their responsibilities, allowing the crisis to escalate.
Ratu Meli has called for traditional leaders to take a more active role in their communities, urging them to monitor activities closely within their vanua. “Now is the time to micromanage,” he stated, highlighting the necessity to focus internally to combat drug-related issues effectively. He urged community leaders to strengthen local committees and maintain ongoing discussions about the drug crisis.
Both Ratu Meli and the chairman of the Ba Provincial Council advocate for enhanced collaboration among various authorities, including the police, military, and Fiji Navy. They stress that a united effort is vital, as previous attempts to handle the drug trade have been marked by isolated approaches. “Now is the time for them to work together to protect our people, our vanua, and our future,” Ratu Meli expressed.
In a proactive move, the Vanua o Vuda will implement a ban on drugs and related activities starting February 2. This decision, influenced by discussions with village elders and a rise in drug-related incidents in the Western Division, marks a significant step taken by traditional leaders to counteract the growing crisis. Ratu Meli detailed that a comprehensive survey of villagers has been conducted to monitor the community effectively.
As part of this initiative, curfews are likely to be enforced — a 9 PM curfew for children and 11 PM for adults — to enhance village security. Kava sessions may also be restricted at night to allow men to focus on community safety. Addressing the younger generation’s well-being is a top priority, with Ratu Meli acknowledging the need for a shift in disciplinary approaches, recognizing that the old ways are no longer effective.
