Fiji's Five-Strong Track Team Heads to Oceania Cup in Tonga

Fiji’s Track Team Heads to Tonga for Oceania Cup, Star Sprinter Sidelined

Five of Fiji’s top track and field athletes are poised to display their skills at the 2025 Oceania Cup in Tonga, commencing tomorrow. The team, which left for Tonga earlier today, features standout athletes including Errol Qaqa in the Men’s 110m Hurdles, Samuela Vunivalu for both the Men’s Long Jump and Triple Jump, Maryann Macedru in Women’s Shot Put, Loata Lewageena competing in Women’s Javelin and Discus, and Sereana Viriviri in Women’s Long Jump and High Jump.

These athletes earned their spots on the team following impressive showings at the recent Pacific Mini Games held in Palau, where Fiji’s athletics team received notable recognition by amassing a total of 22 gold, 27 silver, and 21 bronze medals, securing third place in the overall medal ranking. Noteworthy performances included Errol Qaqa clinching gold in the Men’s 110m hurdles with an exceptional time of 14.59 seconds, while Samuela Vunivalu also excelled in his field events.

Unfortunately, sprinter Heleina Young, who was also selected for the team, will be unable to compete due to medical reasons. Young had garnered significant attention by being named the Most Outstanding Female Athlete at the Pacific Mini Games, where she triumphed with three gold medals. Her remarkable achievements, particularly impressive considering her six-year hiatus from the sport, highlight the abundant talent among Fiji’s athletic ranks.

The Oceania Cup, spanning from tomorrow through Saturday, stands as a crucial opportunity for these athletes to face off against some of the best competitors in the region. Beyond the chance to secure medals, this event represents a platform for the athletes to gain essential experience. The enthusiasm surrounding the competition underscores Fiji’s commitment to fostering athletic talent and promoting excellence. As these athletes step onto the field in Tonga, they not only carry the hopes of their nation but also embody the spirit of resilience and determination that characterizes Fiji’s athletic community, inspiring positivity for the future of athletics in the region.
