Fiji’s Torika Delai Makes World Cup Refereeing History in Morocco

Fiji’s FIFA referee Torika Delai has returned to a hero’s welcome at Nadi International Airport after making history at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Delai officiated in two matches, including the thrilling encounter between Norway and Ecuador, and the game featuring Canada against Zambia. Her remarkable achievement makes her only the second Fijian female referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup event, following in the footsteps of Finau Vulivuli, who represented Fiji at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2016.

Upon her arrival, an elated Delai expressed her feelings about this historic milestone, sharing that it was “a dream come true” to represent Fiji and the Oceania region on such a significant global platform. She acknowledged the challenges of officiating at this level but credited the support from her colleagues, mentors, and the Fijian community for helping her maintain her strength and determination. Delai emphasized the importance of her experience, stating that it has reignited her commitment to inspire the next generation of women in football.

The Fiji Football Association’s Women’s Vice President, Mere Vuda, who welcomed Delai home, expressed immense pride in her accomplishment. Vuda stated that Delai’s achievements exemplify what can be achieved through hard work and dedication, reinforcing the message that Fijian referees can operate at the international level.

Delai’s impressive journey, characterized by her perseverance, highlights the ongoing efforts to empower female referees in Fiji and the Pacific region. Her recent appointment is seen as a beacon of opportunity, not just for herself, but for many aspiring female referees and athletes who look to her as an example of what is possible through dedication.

Delai’s involvement in the Under-17 World Cup, alongside assistant referees Allys Clipsham from New Zealand and Natalia Lumukana from the Solomon Islands, showcases a significant step forward in gender representation within sports. The recognition she received serves as a positive sign for future generations, signifying a hopeful trajectory for women’s inclusion in football officiating. The commitment from the Fiji Football Association to nurture female talent continues to shine through initiatives aimed at uplifting women in sports, fostering optimism for continued growth and representation across the region.

Delai’s achievements not only spotlight her individual success but also symbolize a larger movement towards equality and empowerment for women in sports, illustrating how determination and passion can lead to extraordinary accomplishments in the field of athletics.
