Fijian referee Torika Delai has made history by officiating at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, marking her first appearance on the prestigious World Cup stage. She refereed the Group C match between Norway and Ecuador, becoming only the second Fijian referee to participate in a FIFA World Cup event, following in the footsteps of Finau Vulivuli, who was a trailblazer in the 2016 U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Delai’s appointment highlights the Fiji Football Association’s (FFA) commitment to promoting women’s roles in football. FFA President Rajesh Patel expressed pride in Delai’s achievement, characterizing it as a representation of years of hard work and dedication. He believes that her success will inspire many young Fijians, especially women, to chase their aspirations in football.
At the age of 35, Delai has established an impressive officiating career, advancing from local competitions to regional tournaments, and now to the global arena. Her journey not only showcases her resilience and talent but also reflects a positive shift towards increasing female representation in officiating within the sport.
Delai led an all-female officiating team that included assistant referees Allys Clipsham from New Zealand and Natalia Lumukana from the Solomon Islands, emphasizing the growing recognition of women in referee roles. This teamwork presents an encouraging narrative for aspiring female referees in Fiji and across the Pacific.
Delai’s rise in officiating signifies a broader commitment within the FFA to empower women to take on roles as referees, coaches, and leaders. This approach is essential for creating a nurturing environment for future female athletes. Her accomplishments stand as an inspiration, potentially opening doors for the next generation of referees in Fiji and throughout the Oceania region.
