Police have issued a bench warrant for Apimeleki Tola, the chairman of the iTaukei Land and Fisheries Commission (TLFC), after he was sentenced to nine months in prison by the Lautoka Magistrate’s Court in his absence. This sentence stems from his conviction for assault and property damage related to incidents that occurred in October 2022.
According to police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro, Tola’s absence from court during the sentencing prompted the issuance of the warrant. The decision was made by Magistrate Shelyn Kiran without Tola’s presence. The TLFC, which was established under the iTaukei Lands Act of 1905 and the Fisheries Act of 1941, plays a significant role in overseeing disputes regarding land ownership, fishing rights, and the appointment of customary chiefs.
This event highlights the ongoing fight against corruption and misconduct within Fiji’s public sector, especially in positions of authority. It reflects a trend seen in recent cases involving former employees of the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB). For example, Inosi Tauvoli, another former TLTB employee, was sentenced to two years in prison for offenses related to Abuse of Office. Such incidents underline the judiciary’s dedication to enforcing accountability within public service roles.
As legal proceedings continue, they could contribute to a culture of increased transparency and accountability within Fiji’s government institutions. This proactive stance against misconduct demonstrates a hopeful commitment to ethical governance, aiming to rebuild public confidence in the institutions established to safeguard and serve the community.
