Lania Alexander Robertson, a 19-year-old from the village of Rokovuaka in Nalawa, Ra, is making waves in Fiji’s maritime field, representing a new generation of young women with aspirations that defy traditional limits. Born with maternal ties to Scotland, Ms. Robertson’s journey has been one of resilience and hope, shaped by the support of her single mother, Christina Aileen Robertson, who has instilled in her the belief that strength comes from a positive mindset rather than circumstances.
Recently, she became the sole female recipient of a prestigious scholarship from Swire Shipping, part of the Madigi Vou initiative. This scholarship will allow her to pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering (Level 5) at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies at Fiji National University. For Ms. Robertson, this academic opportunity signifies the culmination of a long-held dream.
“Marine engineering has always been my dream,” she expressed, emphasizing her determination to succeed in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her mother’s encouragement has been a guiding light in her life, inspiring her to defy societal expectations and work toward her passions with courage and conviction.
