Rural and maritime communities in Fiji are experiencing considerable advantages from the Prime Minister’s Small Grant Scheme, which has completed over 180 projects designed to enhance livelihoods, infrastructure, and essential services. Sakiusa Tubuna, the Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, highlighted that the program is transitioning from a welfare focus to promoting community-led development initiatives.
The Central Division has benefitted most from the funding, with 94 projects undertaken, followed by the Eastern Division with 36 projects, the Northern Division with 31, and the Western Division with 23 implementations. Notable achievements include renovations of classrooms, improvements in school furniture, and the construction of teacher’s quarters and sanitation facilities.
“These initiatives have addressed a variety of development needs,” Tubuna stated, emphasizing how the projects align with improving educational resources and community infrastructure. Looking ahead, the next phase of the program intends to focus on entrepreneurship for women and youth, renewable energy initiatives, and rural enterprise development.
In promoting sustainability and local empowerment, the government advocates for active community involvement in project execution, encouraging these communities to share financial responsibilities for their initiatives.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reiterated the scheme’s significance in showcasing the government’s dedication to fostering inclusive growth. He proposed the integration of drug education and awareness in community infrastructure projects, particularly during the construction of facilities like community and church halls.
The Small Grant Scheme is perceived as a crucial effort to empower Fijians, enabling communities to take charge of meaningful advancements in their regions. This initiative builds on prior funding endeavors aimed at uplifting marginalized groups and enhancing community solidarity, charting a hopeful trajectory towards a more inclusive and resilient society.
