In a landmark development for women’s empowerment, Sashi Kiran, Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has launched the “She Fixes It” campaign in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Fiji. Debuted on World Habitat Day, this initiative aims to provide women, particularly those in urban and informal settlements, with essential skills in plumbing and home maintenance.
The campaign is designed to bolster women’s economic independence while contributing to the creation of safer, more sustainable homes and communities. Minister Kiran lauded the program during its launch, highlighting its dual focus on technical skills and fostering leadership and resilience among women. “Today, we are not just celebrating skills,” she remarked, reinforcing the significance of recognizing women’s roles as catalysts for change within their communities.
Aligned with the government’s agenda to enhance women’s economic participation, the “She Fixes It” campaign also addresses broader challenges associated with urban living and climate change. Kiran expressed her appreciation for Habitat for Humanity Fiji’s ongoing commitment and called upon development partners and private-sector representatives to back this critical investment in women’s development. “When women thrive, families are strengthened. When families are strong, our communities prosper and our nation moves forward together,” she emphasized.
This initiative echoes Minister Kiran’s previous advocacy for women’s roles in disaster resilience and community preparedness. She has consistently stressed the importance of incorporating gender considerations into disaster planning and resource allocation, highlighting women’s essential contributions to resilience strategies.
The launch of the “She Fixes It” campaign represents a significant move toward fostering a more resilient and economically empowered society in Fiji—one where women play a pivotal role in initiating positive change and overcoming challenges. As this initiative progresses, it offers a promising outlook on how women’s contributions can drive meaningful transformation within their families and society as a whole.
