In Namosi, a significant gathering unfolded as women from 14 districts united to celebrate the vital contributions of rural women to Fiji’s economy and community development. Sera Halofaki, Director of the Department of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, underscored the often unrecognized role of women in villages, describing them as the backbone of their communities. She noted, “Too often, their efforts go unrecognized, yet they are the silent strength behind our families, farms, and community structures.” Halofaki also called for heightened community actions to tackle domestic violence and sexual assault, persistent issues affecting many women and girls.
The event aligned with the International Day of Rural Women, a global observance celebrated in October, and Pinktober, which honors breast cancer survivors while promoting women’s health awareness. Many women present expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government for recognizing their hard work, especially those committed to agriculture, community health, and education at the grassroots level.
