The Suva market came alive this week as women vendors, farmers, and artisans from Korovou, Nausori, and Suva gathered to commemorate International Day of Rural Women. This event aimed to acknowledge the crucial contributions of Fiji’s rural women to the economy and food security of the nation.
Organized by UN Women alongside the Suva City Council, the celebration featured storytelling and speeches that highlighted the significant roles rural women play in nurturing families and communities. Wally Atalifo, Suva City Council’s Head of Health and Waste Management, praised these women for their tireless commitment. “These women are the backbone of our local markets and rural communities,” he remarked, adding that their efforts are essential in ensuring food security and preserving cultural traditions.
Throughout the day, participants shared inspiring stories detailing their journeys in farming and entrepreneurship, showcasing the power of empowerment. This celebration reflects similar past events in Fiji, such as the International Rural Women’s Day in Saolo Village, which also focused on the strength and leadership exhibited by women in rural areas despite facing various challenges. Filimoni Vosarogo, Acting Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, underscored the vital role women play in improving livelihoods and driving development even in the face of adversity.
Opportunities for rural women have expanded recently, exemplified by the Women’s mini-craft show in Naroi, Moala, where women presented their handmade crafts and agricultural goods. This initiative not only promoted economic empowerment but also strengthened community bonds by enabling women to exchange skills and ideas, thereby opening doors to future prospects.
As such celebrations continue, they serve as pillars of hope, building stronger networks among women and fostering economic independence within their communities. These events not only underscore the resilience of women in Fiji but also reflect a broader movement towards a more equitable society that honors their essential contributions.
