Youth advocate and human rights activist Avenai Serutabua has sounded the alarm on the widening disparities in opportunities available to youths living in rural versus urban areas. In his recent statements, Serutabua emphasized that the discussions around equality often overlook the fundamental differences in access to resources and opportunities that vary significantly by location.
He remarked, “Most of the time we like to believe rural and urban youths are offered the same chances, but that’s not always the reality.” Rural youths frequently face a lack of essential resources and support, putting them at a disadvantage compared to their urban peers. Serutabua is a strong proponent of equity, advocating for a system tailored to individual needs rather than a uniform approach.
To address these discrepancies, he highlighted the urgent need to bring essential resources, educational programs, job opportunities, and support directly to rural communities. “I really hope we see more efforts to bring programs… especially to those who live afar from locations like Nadogotuki in Savusavu, Nakida in Naitasiri, and Namoli in Navosa,” Serutabua stated. His vision is centered on empowering these communities and tackling their specific challenges, believing that such initiatives could foster transformative change that benefits not just the youths but the vitality of entire communities.
This call to action resonates with ongoing concerns in Fiji regarding educational inequities and infrastructure challenges faced by rural areas. Recent discussions have highlighted the need for increased funding and resources in rural schools to ensure that students can access equitable educational support. The disparity is not confined to education alone; it extends to the demand for improved infrastructure and economic development opportunities in these regions.
The hope for a better future hinges on the collaborative efforts of government bodies, local communities, and advocacy groups to effectively tackle these pressing issues. A focus on localized support and resources could pave the way for a more equitable and empowered future for rural youths across Fiji. With more voices advocating for change, there is a sense of optimism that meaningful progress can be made, fostering a more inclusive environment for all.
