Fiji is currently witnessing a significant increase in rural-to-urban migration, as many citizens are drawn to cities in pursuit of better job opportunities, education, and essential services. This demographic shift has started to place considerable pressure on urban infrastructure, resulting in heightened demand for housing and transportation. At the same time, rural communities are facing challenges, including labor shortages and a decline in agricultural productivity.
Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, addressed the issue, highlighting the urgent need for balanced development across the nation. He pointed out that enhancing rural infrastructure and creating economic opportunities is crucial, enabling residents to prosper in their communities without the necessity to migrate to urban centers. Vasu noted, “Many villages are now empty, with only older residents remaining, leading to a significant loss of people and traditional knowledge.”
With these concerns in mind, Vasu is calling for increased support from the government and stakeholders to foster sustainable urban growth while simultaneously investing in rural areas. This issue was a central topic during the National Rural Development Plan consultation, with plans in motion to incorporate these discussions into the upcoming development strategy.
The focus on rural sustainability and infrastructure development is essential for maintaining the cultural heritage and knowledge of Fiji’s villages, creating a more resilient future for both urban and rural areas. This balanced approach could pave the way for inclusive growth and the preservation of traditional lifestyles in the face of modernization.
