The government has announced that the developments in Keiyasi and Seaqaqa townships are making progress, despite some delays. Both projects are anticipated to revitalize rural areas into thriving growth hubs. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa provided an update during a parliamentary session, highlighting the Keiyasi project located in Nadroga. This initiative encompasses 9.3 hectares of iTaukei land with a projected investment of $10.8 million.
The planned infrastructure for Keiyasi includes 27 commercial lots, a civic center, a market, a bus and carrier stand, two industrial sites, a service station, and a designated area for the National Fire Authority. Civil works commenced in February 2024 and are slated for completion by the end of 2026, with $2.2 million already expended and an additional $1.6 million allocated for the current financial year.
Meanwhile, in Seaqaqa, Macuata, the town’s boundaries have been officially established, and construction has begun on a market and bus stand, which are essential for anchoring the new township. The excavation, clearing, leveling, and foundation works are progressing well, and the Ministry has set aside $1.7 million for ongoing efforts this year. The Seaqaqa project is expected to wrap up by April next year.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized that these developments aim not just to empower landowners and local communities but also to generate jobs and provide vital services directly where people live. He continued to stress the importance of these projects in improving local economies and increasing access to essential services, providing hope for sustainable growth in the region. As these initiatives progress, they represent a promising step towards enhanced infrastructure and services in Fiji’s rural areas.
