Fiji’s Road Toll Rises to 52 After Weekend of Fatal Crashes

In the past two days, Fiji has witnessed a series of tragic road accidents resulting in the loss of three lives, including that of a 10-year-old girl. The first incident occurred on Friday along Kings Road in Lautoka, where a 47-year-old woman lost her life while traveling in a vehicle driven by a 27-year-old man. The vehicle collided with an oncoming truck during an overtaking maneuver, leading to fatal injuries for the passenger.

The second accident took place on Saturday afternoon on Kings Road in Navola, Korolevu, Sigatoka. A young girl was killed when the car she was traveling in with her father veered off the road and hit a post. The girl’s father and three other passengers are currently receiving treatment at Sigatoka Hospital.

In a third incident last night, a woman in her 30s was victim to a suspected hit-and-run while crossing Stinson Parade in Suva. The vehicle struck her and failed to stop, leaving her fatally injured. She was declared dead upon arrival at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Authorities are actively searching for the driver involved in this tragic accident.

These unfortunate events have pushed the national road death toll to 52, up from 42 during the same period last year. Despite initiatives to enhance road safety, these accidents emphasize the need for increased vigilance and adherence to traffic laws among both drivers and pedestrians to prevent further loss of life. The recent decline in road deaths in previous periods had provided hope that safety measures were making a positive difference. However, these recent incidents reveal that continued efforts are crucial to ensure the safety of all road users.

Amid these tragedies, it is essential for the community to come together, enhancing road safety awareness and fostering a culture of responsibility on the roads, which is vital for reducing the likelihood of such heart-wrenching incidents recurring in the future.
