Eliki Qalubau, a passionate and dedicated teacher from Mokani Village in Tailevu, is driven by the belief that small sacrifices made today will yield significant rewards tomorrow. At just 27 years old, he has already committed four years to the teaching profession, impacting the lives of students as he works diligently to shape future generations.
As someone who once wore a school uniform himself, Eliki approaches his work with an unwavering passion and a desire to give back to the community. His teaching journey began in remote schools before he made the move to the city, where he currently teaches at Suva Grammar School. Despite the challenges he faced, including a transition from primary to secondary education starting with a role at Vaturova Koroalau High School in Cakaudrove, Eliki has gained valuable experience that has only deepened his commitment to education.
Throughout his journey, Eliki encountered obstacles, such as adapting to the conditions of rural postings, where he had to adjust to life with limited resources, including inadequate electricity and connectivity. His determination, however, allowed him to thrive, thanks to the support and guidance of fellow educators. Reflecting on these experiences, he states, “Having to settle into an interior school whereby there was no lights nor network connectivity – I had to adapt and fit in, in order to survive. But it was all worth the sacrifice.”
Eliki’s mother has been a significant influence in his life, providing unwavering support. He strongly credits her encouragement as pivotal to his journey, stating, “I am blessed because she shows up for me no matter what.” In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Eliki is dedicated to his own education, having completed a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a postgraduate diploma in international relations and diplomacy. He is currently pursuing another postgraduate diploma in education.
His story is reflective of the broader commitment shared by many educators across Fiji. Similar to dedicated teachers like Leone Vulakauvaki, who took on teaching challenges at Deuba District School, and Josefa Mataitoga, who has inspired countless students over his 15 years of service, Eliki embodies the resilience and adaptability that teaching in difficult conditions require. Eliki believes the effort put into education can lead to impactful change both within his classroom and the community at large. He inspiringly remarks, “Those small sacrifices don’t go unnoticed; they add up, and one day you’ll reap the rewards, so keep hustling,” encouraging others to remain committed and passionate despite the challenges they may face.
