Fiji has made significant strides in expanding its agricultural exports, recently marking the successful shipment of three tonnes of Ripley Queen pineapples to New Zealand. This first commercial trial shipment took place earlier this month, on November 5th, as part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways’ Agriculture Trade & Marketing Research Programme. Minister Tomasi Tunabuna expressed pride in this achievement, noting that it reflects the successful collaboration among government entities, industry partners, and local communities.
The shipment of these pineapples showcases Fiji’s growing ability to meet international market demands, including stringent biosecurity standards. Admired for their sweetness, strong flavor, and longevity, the Ripley Queen pineapples have already garnered positive feedback from New Zealand consumers.
Further emphasizing the importance of this milestone, Tunabuna explained that this export success stemmed from partnerships formed during the first National Agriculture Mini-Trade Forum, which facilitated connections between Fijian farmers and New Zealand’s agricultural authorities. This initiative showcases Fiji’s commitment to enhancing trade relations, which has already seen substantial growth with New Zealand emerging as a top importer of Fijian fresh produce.
In previous reports, New Zealand’s First Secretary, Adam Crichton, highlighted that Fiji exports over 80% of the Pacific’s fresh produce to New Zealand, a market that demands approximately $2.7 billion worth of fresh fruits and vegetables annually. This creates abundant opportunities for Fijian farmers to support their livelihoods and contribute to the national economy.
As the Ministry continues to monitor the performance of the exported pineapples while offering ongoing support to farmers and exporters, Tunabuna encouraged the Fiji diaspora in New Zealand to advocate for and promote Fiji’s high-quality produce abroad. This call to action highlights a cohesive effort to further strengthen bilateral trade relations, which could foster economic growth and resilience.
Overall, Fiji’s recent achievement in exporting pineapples symbolizes not only a victory for local agriculture but also reflects a broader trend towards increased food security for New Zealand and economic empowerment for Fijian farmers. As both countries move forward in their trade relations, there is optimism for future collaboration that will benefit their respective economies and communities.
