Fiji’s RFMF Praised for Upholding Democracy as Security Strategy Takes Shape

Fiji’s RFMF in Democratic Spotlight: Redefining National Security

At the recent National Federation Party convention in Labasa, Fiji, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua lauded the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) for their exemplary dedication to democratic principles during the 2022 General Election. He commended the military for their professionalism and maturity in navigating challenges under their leadership, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the people’s will through democratic processes.

Highlighting the RFMF’s resilience amid personal threats in 2022 and 2023, Tikoduadua noted their success in maintaining stability and avoiding significant issues. This commitment is crucial for the military’s future role within a democratic Fiji, as outlined in the National Security Strategy (NSS). The NSS envisions the RFMF respecting civilian leadership and democratic values, ensuring their involvement in strengthening national security is rooted in these principles.

Tikoduadua highlighted the RFMF’s active participation in shaping the NSS, which involves evaluating past actions, understanding current conditions, and planning for future stability. Although rebuilding trust remains a challenge, the NSS’s commitments position the RFMF for a collective approach to national security, emphasizing unity and collaboration.

The minister’s focus on democratic engagement and collaborative governance underscores an optimistic outlook for Fiji’s future. As the nation moves towards political stability, the RFMF’s evolution from past political involvement to a focus on protecting citizens’ rights and security represents a step towards a more inclusive society. This redefined role aligns with broader national aspirations and signifies hope for lasting peace and stability in Fiji.
