Fiji’s Remote Hospital Goes Solar, Ensuring 24/7 Power

Reliable electricity has been introduced at the Lomaloma Subdivisional Hospital on Vanuabalavu, becoming a significant asset to healthcare in one of Fiji’s most remote areas. This hospital now runs on a newly installed solar power system, the largest of its kind for any healthcare facility in Fiji, marking a pivotal advancement toward sustainable energy solutions.

The implementation of this solar power project, which was coordinated by CBS Power Solutions in collaboration with the Biomedical team from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, ended a long-standing reliance on diesel generators. The transition to solar power is expected to enhance healthcare delivery, reducing the frequent power outages that have hampered services. Following a thorough scoping exercise and final assessments earlier this year, installation commenced, culminating in this successful project.

Dr. Krishan Prasad, the Acting Subdivisional Medical Officer, emphasized the benefits of a reliable 24-hour power supply, particularly for medical emergencies that often occur at night. The new system will facilitate the use of oxygen concentrator machines during critical times, effectively reducing dependency on oxygen cylinders and minimizing carbon emissions associated with diesel generators.

The project has received funding through the Manaaki grant from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade under the Fiji Oxygen Program, with support from Cure Kids Fiji. As a result of this initiative, Lomaloma Hospital and the surrounding nursing stations can now provide more efficient and life-saving healthcare powered entirely by clean energy.

This achievement exemplifies Fiji’s broader strategy to enhance energy access and healthcare infrastructure in remote communities. The successful installation of renewable energy systems is integral to sustainable development efforts, echoing similar initiatives across Fiji aimed at increasing clean energy usage. With ongoing improvements, there is hope for a more resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of all Fijians, particularly those living in underserved areas. The commitment to transitioning to renewable energy not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also positions Fiji as a leader in sustainable solutions for healthcare delivery in the region.
