In a passionate defense of the People’s Alliance-led coalition government, former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica addressed Parliament, attributing the revival of genuine democracy in Fiji to the leadership of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka after almost two decades of what he described as “democracy in name only.”
Reflecting on the coalition’s accomplishments since taking office in 2022, Kamikamica asserted, “We have brought back real democracy to Fiji,” compellingly contrasting the current administration with the past governance of FijiFirst, which he accused of fostering an “atmosphere of fear” with its restrictive media laws. He lamented that during the previous regime, media freedom was curtailed, and laws such as the Media Industry Development Act (MIDA) contributed to this climate of intimidation, making it difficult for accurate reporting to thrive.
Kamikamica emphasized the coalition’s decisive actions in its initial parliamentary sessions, including the repeal of MIDA and the dismantling of discriminatory laws that impacted women’s voting rights. “We threw MIDA into the dustbin of history, where it belongs,” he declared, advocating for a political environment that recognizes and amplifies the voices of all citizens, particularly women.
His statements echo a larger commitment voiced throughout the government, with repeated assurances of focusing on initiatives aimed at restoring democracy and ensuring fundamental rights for Fijians. Kamikamica pointed out that the government has been actively addressing numerous challenges, including outdated electoral laws and issues hampering women’s participation in politics.
Furthermore, Kamikamica’s remarks are regarded as part of a broader vision for a united Fiji where collaboration among citizens fosters progress and accountability. This ongoing pursuit of transparency and democratic reform is significant in laying the groundwork for a resilient political landscape, fostering hope for continued evolution and stability.
As Fiji navigates its path forward, Kamikamica’s optimistic outlook is a reminder of the potential for positive change, emphasizing a shared vision for a future marked by trust, inclusivity, and mutual respect among all Fijians.
