Mikaele Ravalaca, the newly crowned WBA Oceania Lightweight Champion, showcased a remarkable display of resilience and determination in his victory over Francis Chua in Suva last night. Despite admitting to being only 15 percent fit going into the title bout, Ravalaca credited his faith, self-belief, and mental strength for his success in the ring.
Ravalaca explained that while his preparation for the fight was less than ideal, it was his confidence and focus that ultimately made the difference. “I believe in myself, and God has given me the mindset and the strength for me to compete in this sport. I’m so grateful to be a boxer, representing Fiji, and to keep this title in Fiji,” he stated.
His experience proved crucial; even when not in peak physical condition, Ravalaca’s sharp mental game elevated his performance, allowing him to secure the win. He expressed gratitude towards King’s Boxing Promotion for the opportunity to showcase local talent and has already set his sights on future challenges, with a fight planned against IBO Asia Pacific champion Runqi Zhou next year.
This victory not only marks a significant personal achievement for Ravalaca but also serves as an uplifting moment for the Fijian boxing community, which has been experiencing a resurgence of interest and talent. Fighters like Ravalaca exemplify the potential of the sport in Fiji, inspiring a new generation of athletes and embodying hope for the future of boxing in the region.
