Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized that the recent decision to increase electricity tariffs was made with careful consideration. He acknowledged the concerns raised by the public following the announcement but reassured citizens that the government views these measures as essential for the future.

“The decisions were not taken lightly,” he stated. “They are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability, reliability, and expansion of our national power supply.” Mr. Rabuka highlighted that this initiative includes critical investments in renewable energy sources and the electrification of rural areas, aiming for a cleaner and more accessible electricity supply for all citizens.

Additionally, he pointed out that the government respects the independence of the Fiji Commerce Commission (FCCC) and cannot interfere with its decisions. This underscores the importance of an autonomous regulatory body in managing the complexities of energy supply and pricing.

Overall, while the tariff increase may raise concerns, it reflects a strategic approach towards a more sustainable and reliable energy future for Fiji.
