The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has reported the issuance of 15,589 traffic infringement notices (TINs) through its portable speed cameras within a two-month period, from September 1 to October 28, 2025. This initiative highlights the LTA’s intensified efforts to enforce traffic regulations across various regions in the country.
According to LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa, the Western Division saw the highest number of offenses, with 8,624 violations. The Central-Eastern Division followed with 5,314 infractions, while the Northern Division recorded 1,651 offenses. The fines for speeding range from $25 to $60 based on the severity of the violation, leading to an estimated total revenue of $654,738, calculated from an average penalty of $42.
At the launch of the portable speed cameras, Rokosawa reinforced that this initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at promoting road safety in Fiji. The cameras are placed in critical areas along highways and roads known for having a higher risk of accidents, enhancing the LTA’s proactive measures to monitor and enforce speed compliance.
Rokosawa also pointed out the alarming correlation between speeding and road fatalities, with previous reports indicating that speeding accounts for nearly 40% of such fatalities in Fiji. This statistic underscores the necessity of implementing strict actions to mitigate reckless driving and to encourage responsible behavior among all road users.
The deployment of portable speed cameras builds on the LTA’s earlier plans, which included fixed speed and red-light camera installations in urban areas. These ongoing efforts reflect a dedication to improving road safety and increasing accountability among drivers. The LTA remains committed to partnering with various stakeholders to initiate ongoing educational campaigns and enforce driving regulations, expressing hope that these strategies will significantly enhance traffic safety and lessen the number of accidents on Fijian roads.
By fostering a culture of responsible driving, the LTA aims to establish a safer environment for all road users, signaling a hopeful future with a potential decrease in road fatalities.
