Fiji’s Portable Speed Cameras Ramp Up Enforcement for Safer Roads

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has announced the issuance of 15,589 traffic infringement notices (TINs) through its portable speed cameras in a two-month timeframe. These infractions were recorded from September 1 to October 28, 2025, highlighting the increased enforcement initiated by the LTA in various key areas across the country.

According to LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa, the highest number of offenses occurred in the Western Division, which accounted for 8,624 violations. The Central-Eastern Division followed with 5,314 offenses, while the Northern Division reported 1,651 infractions. The fines imposed for speeding vary according to the severity of the offense, ranging from $25 to $60 for violations, culminating in an estimated total revenue of $654,738 from these fines based on an average penalty of $42.

At the time of launching the portable cameras, Rokosawa emphasized that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing road safety throughout Fiji. The cameras are strategically positioned along key highways and roads noted for their accident-prone nature, contributing to LTA’s proactive approach to monitoring and enforcing speed limits.

Rokosawa also pointed out that speeding is a significant factor contributing to road fatalities in the country. This calls for stringent measures to curb reckless driving behavior and promote responsible driving practices among all road users. Previous reports have indicated that speeding contributes to nearly 40% of road fatalities in Fiji, underscoring the importance of the portable speed cameras in mitigating such incidents.

This initiative also aligns with earlier measures taken by the LTA, which include the installation of fixed speed and red-light cameras in urban areas. The deployment of portable speed cameras reflects a continuous effort to improve road safety, reinforcing the urgent need for accountability among drivers. As the LTA collaborates with various stakeholders to implement ongoing educational campaigns and enforce driving regulations, authorities express optimism that these efforts will yield substantial improvements in traffic safety and reduce the prevalence of accidents on Fijian roads.

With a commitment to fostering a more responsible driving culture, the LTA aims to create a safer environment for all road users, signaling hope for a future where road fatalities are significantly lowered.
