New findings from the Fiji STEPS Survey 2025 highlight a troubling trend in health behaviors across the nation, revealing that over half of Fiji’s population is not engaging in any form of vigorous physical activity. According to the survey, a significant 56.4 percent of respondents reported a lack of participation in such activities, with notable variations observed among different demographic groups.

The survey emphasizes a stark gender disparity in physical activity, with a striking 75.3 percent of women indicating they do not engage in vigorous exercise, in contrast to 38.5 percent of men. This gap underscores the necessity for specific initiatives aimed at promoting physical activity among women.

Age also plays a crucial role in determining activity levels. Among individuals aged 60 to 69, more than 82 percent reported not participating in vigorous activity. Alarmingly, 43.8 percent of younger adults aged 18 to 29 claimed they do not engage in such exercises either. These patterns raise concerns regarding the long-term health implications for these age cohorts.

Furthermore, sedentary lifestyles appear to be alarmingly widespread, with Fijians averaging almost four hours each day in sitting or reclining positions. Urban residents exhibit even higher levels of inactivity, averaging 236 minutes a day, compared to 212 minutes for those living in rural areas. Ethnic differences also emerge, as Fijians of Indian descent report higher sedentary times than iTaukei Fijians.

In a positive note, nearly 60 percent of survey participants stated that healthcare professionals had advised them to increase their levels of physical activity within the past year. This indicates a growing recognition of the importance of exercise within the population.

Interestingly, the survey uncovers a “physical activity paradox” in Fiji: while rural residents tend to engage in more overall physical activity through daily chores and labor, they report lower levels of vigorous activity compared to their urban counterparts. This complex scenario highlights the urgent need for targeted public health strategies that effectively address the disparities in activity levels and promote healthier living for all communities.

The implications of this survey call for immediate actions to enhance physical activity engagement and reduce sedentary behavior, crucial for bolstering public health across Fiji. With a focus on tailored initiatives, there is significant potential for fostering a healthier, more active population moving forward.
